Official trail networks

Easiest/Easy Intermediate Advanced Expert Not graded

Government & park-agency trail networks — DOC and regional councils in New Zealand, the US Forest Service, swisstopo and other agencies as their data comes online. Colours are the agency's own grade where one is published (grey = ungraded, not easy). open CLOSED — closures shown where the agency publishes them, on the retrieval date shown in the popup, not live. Community routes

Volunteer-mapped routes from OpenStreetMap (ODbL) — Te Araroa, the Hillary Trail, the Via Alpina, GR paths and the rest of the world's hiking-route network. Major international and national routes appear first as you zoom out; regional and local routes join as you zoom in. No official grade or walking time — treat as a guide.

Connecting paths

Fine topographic connecting paths where available (New Zealand: LINZ Topo50, CC BY 4.0) — the centrelines that join the marked routes. Not graded tracks; closed where marked. Everywhere else this draws every walkable way OpenStreetMap holds (ODbL) — paths, footways, bridleways and steps from zoom 12, plus farm and forestry tracks, drawn dashed because they are roads you may walk, not trails. Most carry no name and no grade; that is normal and is not a judgement about the path.

Boot-cleaning stations

Biosecurity wash stations, shown where an authority publishes them (New Zealand: kauri-dieback stations — full Auckland Council coverage plus landmark posts like Tāne Mahuta). Scrub and spray going in and coming out — a minute at the post is what keeps forests open. Many more exist that aren't published as open data, so a blank area is NOT "none here" — clean your boots at every protected-forest track.

Official tracks carry their agency's own grade and published times where they exist. Tap a track for details and "Follow this track". Tracks we don't chart still exist — absence here is never an all-clear to bush-bash.
